An Alternate Account (or "Alt" for short) is a secondary account used by a [[Resident]] in addition to their main [[Second Life]] account.

It is easy for one person to create any number of Alternate Accounts, since there is no charge for creating a basic Second Life account. Linden Lab reserves the right to charge for the creation of large numbers of multiple accounts for a single person, but at present does not do so.

==Uses for Alts==
There are many legitimate reasons for creating Alts, such as:
*Being able to build or script without being disturbed
*Holding land
*Using the account to role-play

There are also less legitimate reasons for creating Alts, which have led to Alts being sometimes viewed negatively, such as using them to
*Abuse others anonymously, a practice known as [[Griefing]]
*Get around a ban on their main account

==Etiquette concerning Alts==
It is against the Terms of Service and Community Standards to reveal the main identity of an Alternate Account if the owner of the Alt has not done so themselves.
