The Copyleft license was originally invented by [[Richard Stallman]] as a [[Free Software License]]. It is named in contrast to the traditional [[Copyright]] license.

Under a Copyleft license the author retains copyright and permits redistribution and modification under terms to ensure that all modified versions remain free for as long as the author wishes. 

The [[General Public License]] (GPL) is the most prominent Copyleft license.
