Special terms used in [[Second Life]], in alphabetical order: *Artificial Intelligence (AI): while Artificial Intelligence generally means the science of simulating human intelligence with computers, in [[Second Life]] an "AI" often means a specific simulated intelligence, in other words a Bot (robot) or Non-Playing-Character *[[Alt]]: *[[Avatar]]: your persona in Second Life, as represented by the physical person, animal or other character seen by the other users of the system *Bot: *Calling card *[[Chat]]: text chat *Grid: SL is run on around thousand computers, collectively called *Group: *[[Instant Message]] (IM) : private text message sent to an individual or a group *[[Inworld]]: *Lag: *Linden Lab: the company that owns and runs Second Life *Lindens: the term "The Lindens" refers to the collective group of Linden Lab employees, whose [[Inworld]] characters all have the last name "Linden" *Newbie: also called "Noobie" or "Noob", refers to a new user of Second Life *Non Playing Character (NPC) *Real Life (RL): the real world, as opposed to the simulated reality of [[Second Life]] *Region: each computer runs a bit of the world, which is known as a region - the region name is shown in the top bar. *Resident: this term refers to any user of Second Life, considered as a user of the system, rather than as simply a three-dimensional representation or [[Avatar]] *Sim: the computer running a region is called a “sim”, short for “simulator”.
